Madekwe was born in South London, England into a family of mixed blood. Her mother and father have both been English. She was born in the south London Council Estate. She was a student at The Brit School aged 14. She earned her BA in acting from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. While at school she appeared in a variety of stage productions like the King Henry V's Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights.
Madekwe's acting journey began in the series Storm Damage. She has since made appearances in Teachers, Doctors Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe was a part of Ashley Davenport for ABC's Drama The Beautiful Life. The two-episode series aired for just two weeks on The CW and then it ended. However, in May of 2013, news broke that Madekwe will quit the show due to her guest appearance in the first episode of the series' third season. She was raised by her parents Roy and Patty along with her older brothers, Rob, Brett, and twins Todd and Bram. Ashley was raised in the arenas and baseball fields because the four brothers who were athletic played hockey and baseball and basketball in summer and winter. Ashley did not have the ability to walk. She danced. When she reached just 2 1/2 years old when she was a little older, she was a part of Baby Ballet. Ashley developed a passion for dancing after she started the Baby Ballet. Ashley participated in the top divisions of tap, jazz hip-hop, ballet Acrobatics, Lyrical Musical Theatre as well as pointe until the time she completed in high school. Top soloists at important competitions like International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance which were all given to Ashley.
